Pickleball
We have introduced pickleball at The Downs which has already been enjoyed by many of our regular tennis players. This is a relatively new game, at least to the UK, which is played on a court half the size of a tennis court. We have four pickleball courts at the club allowing 16 members at any one time to enjoy this new fun experience. Quite different from tennis in terms of the size of the paddle, more like a table tennis bat than a racket, and a plastic ball, lighter and slightly larger than a tennis ball which takes a bit of getting used to if you are already a tennis player but that's when the fun starts!
The games are usually played in doubles with the winners being the first to 11 points with points only being won on service. As the matches are relatively short, this means that, even if there are more than 16 players turning up to club sessions, no-one has to wait long to get back on court as the games turn around quite quickly.
If you are interested in joining in, then you are welcome to turn up to one of our club sessions which are Thursdays at 6pm, Saturdays at 4pm and Sundays at 2pm. There would be a nominal charge of £3 for a trial session and, if you like it, annual membership is £90 prorated. Paddles and balls are provided.
Our pickleball courts are floodlit so we have no excuse not to play all year round!
We have a coach, Tom Corfield from South Croydon Pickleball, who is happy to attend the club for regular coaching sessions.
PIckleball is a surprisingly good workout and we are all ready for a beer afterwards!
